Every year wedding bells ring for millions of American adults. These men and women vow to love and cherish their new spouses until death parts them. If you’ve been to a wedding ceremony, you know how beautiful and meaningful they truly are. Unfortunately, many American adults don’t keep these precious vows. The American Psychological Association reports that forty to fifty percent of married couples who live in the U.S. will divorce. (1) Human beings are imperfect, which means that many will not be faithful towards others. People can be unfaithful by lying to or abandoning a spouse, friend, or child. They can even be unfaithful in their job or other activities. Humans are unfaithful. But Paul’s second letter to Timothy reminds us of an important and encouraging truth-
“If we are faithless, He remains faithful…” 1 Timothy 2:13a
Though people may be unfaithful to us, God will never be unfaithful. Even if we are not always faithful to or we have doubts about God, He remains faithful to us. The Greek word for “faithful” is pistos. When someone is described as pistos (faithful), they are seen as trustworthy. When this word is used of God in the Bible, it communicates that God abides by His promises. (2)
God is faithful! He is trustworthy! And He always keeps His promises. The Bible tells us about God’s faithfulness. Jen Wilkin writes in her book, In His Image:
“The Bible is our great Ebenezer, a memorial stone to the faithfulness of God, carefully recorded and preserved for His children.” (3)
Because human beings are imperfect, they can also be very forgetful. We can often forget the immense faithfulness of our God, but we have the blessing of having His sacred Word within our grasp. The authors of the Bible have recorded and preserved God’s attribute of faithfulness so that we, God’s children, could be reminded of it. Here are a few verses from the Bible that remind us of our God’s great faithfulness:
“Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love Him and keep His commandments, to a thousand generations,” Deuteronomy 7:9
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation He will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13
“And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:6
Our God is faithful! He loves all His children, and He has an unbreakable and everlasting covenant with them. He forgives all their sins and cleanses them from all unrighteousness. He helps His children to endure the temptations they face on a daily basis and always provides ways of escape for them. He sanctifies His people and continually makes them more like Him.
God has made a covenant with you! He loves you, He forgives you, He helps you, and He sanctifies you. God is faithful to you! He never breaks His vows and promises, so you can always trust Him and His Word. Trust Him today in whatever circumstance you find yourself in because He is so worthy of your trust! And be faithful to Him. Be faithful to show His love. Be faithful to read His Word. Be faithful to pray:
“Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O LORD, faithful God.” Psalm 31:5
