Avengers Disassemble

I am a huge fan of Marvel movies. Ever since the debut of the first Iron Man film in 2008, I’ve been hooked on the lives and stories of the characters within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). I am such a big fan that two years ago during my month-long Christmas break from school I watched all twenty-three movies in the Infinity Saga in the order that they premiered (if you want proof, check out my Marvel Marathon story highlight on Instagram). This year, I’ve watched every new MCU movie in theaters the weekend it released, I’ve seen every episode of the MCU shows on Disney+ (twice!), and I have plans to see the new Spider-Man: No Way Home movie this Saturday.

Marvel fans, myself included, love these movies because the characters are so relatable, and they face challenges that are similar to the ones we struggle with. They inspire us to face our problems head-on and avenge the wrongdoings that occur in our lives. For those with a strong sense of justice, seeking vengeance against evildoers feels good and right, and surely it must be good and right when it is portrayed so positively in superhero movies. However, the Bible tells a different story.

Salt & Light

How are Christians to interact with the culture they live in? If you’ve attended church for any length of time, you’ve likely heard that we are to “be in the world, not of it.” But what exactly does this mean? What does “being in the world but not of the world” look like? Well, Jesus makes it clear in His famous Sermon on the Mount.

Confronting Injustice Without Compromising Truth

This past year we’ve heard a lot about social justice, the importance of it, and why it is necessary to fix the injustices happening in our nation. There is no doubt that there are numerous injustices that occur on a daily basis. We live in a fallen world full of sinful beings. As Christians, we are called to do justice (Micah 6:8). We are called to help orphans and widows (James 1:27), feed the hungry, welcome the stranger, and clothe the naked (Matthew 25:35-40).

However, a lot of the solutions to injustices being presented by our culture are rooted in humanistic ideologies rather than biblical truth. They seem to value perceived experiences over facts, and they divide everyone into social groups rather than treating everyone equally as image-bearers of God. Also, these “solutions” often end up doing more harm than good. These social justice ideologies are beginning to seep into churches and Christian writings all across the country and the world, but we must take a step back and analyze these ideas to determine if they really line up with what the Bible teaches. And this is exactly what Thaddeus Williams writes about in his book, Confronting Injustice Without Compromising Truth.

He is Just

About 3.1 million children around the world die from undernutrition every year.[1] Natural disasters kill around 90,000 people and affect millions more.[2] In 2017, 17.79 million people died from different cardiovascular diseases, 9.56 million people died from cancer, and over 405,000 people were killed by another human being.[3] These numbers are absolutely devastating, and they lead people to ask questions, like “How could a good God let an innocent child die? Where was God in this disaster? How could God let these murderers continue to live?”

We’re not the only ones who ask these questions. People in the Bible asked God the same thing (Jeremiah 12:1, Psalm 89:46). We know God is good, but sometimes we don’t understand why He lets certain things happen. It just doesn’t seem fair.

But God is fair. He is just.
